Eagles of the Nooksack: A December Tradition

Eagles of the Nooksack: A December Tradition

Each winter, the Nooksack River in Washington becomes a sanctuary for bald eagles, drawn by the annual salmon run. As the salmon complete their life cycle, the river provides a feast that sustains these magnificent birds through the coldest months of the year.

This film captures the timeless ritual—eagles soaring above the valley, gathering in the tall evergreens, and feeding along the icy riverbanks. Their predictable return each December is a striking reminder of the deep connection between wildlife and the rhythms of the land.

Join me in experiencing this enduring spectacle, a celebration of resilience, wild beauty, and the Pacific Northwest in its purest form.

Western Grebe

Dancing on Water: The Courtship Rituals of Western Grebes

When I first moved to Idaho, I set my sights on capturing the mesmerizing behavior of western grebes. After weeks of observation and study, I was finally rewarded with one of nature’s most elegant performances—their courtship ritual, famously known as “rushing.”

This video captures these remarkable birds as they glide across the water’s surface in perfect unison, their synchronized strides creating the illusion of walking on water. This awe-inspiring display of strength and coordination is a testament to their bond, as each movement mirrors the other in an intricate dance of courtship.

The weeks I spent observing the grebes offered me a deeper understanding of their behavior—the way they communicate with subtle movements, the moments of stillness before their explosive rushes, and the unmistakable connection they share during this mating ritual.

Through this blog, I aim to showcase the beauty and precision of the western grebe’s world, a reminder of the wonders that await when we take the time to truly watch and learn from nature..

Osprey and Kokanee salmon

Osprey Odyssey: A Three-Day Spectacle of Precision and Patience

Nature rewards those who wait, and over three days of quiet anticipation on a windswept beach, I witnessed a breathtaking display of skill and instinct. The stars of this show were the magnificent osprey—masters of the skies and unparalleled hunters of the waters—swooping down with unerring precision to claim their prize: Kokanee salmon.

This video compilation captures their extraordinary dives in stunning detail. The osprey’s keen eyes lock onto the shimmering fish below the surface, their wings folding back in a moment of sheer grace before plunging into the water with explosive force. Time after time, they emerged victorious, a salmon clutched tightly in their talons.

Patience was key, both for the osprey and for me, as I waited on the beach to witness these incredible feats. The rhythm of nature unfolded before me—the osprey soaring high, scanning the water, diving, and then rising again, fish in tow. Each dive was a story of determination, power, and elegance.

Through this blog, I hope to share the awe of those three days, standing witness to a timeless dance between predator and prey.

Growing Up Wild: Barred owl nest

Growing Up Wild: The Journey of a Barred Owl Family

Deep within the forest, a barred owl family opened a window into their world, and over the span of several weeks, I had the privilege of capturing their story. This video chronicles the life of two devoted adult owls and their three curious owlets as they grew, learned, and began their journey of independence.

From the first glimpses of the fluffy owlets peeking out of their cozy nest to their wobbly first attempts at perching on nearby branches, each moment was a testament to nature’s resilience and beauty. The parents worked tirelessly, providing food and guiding their young, teaching them the skills they’d need to survive.

As the weeks passed, the owlets transformed from cautious observers to adventurous fledglings, testing their wings and discovering their place in the forest. Watching their progress—their first flights, their playful interactions, and their attempts at hunting—was both heartwarming and awe-inspiring.

This blog celebrates the intimate and tender moments of a barred owl family and invites you to share in the wonder of their wild lives.
